The Glitter Guide had a great feature this week on DIY layered necklaces, describing, step-by-step how to achieve the look of a "bib" necklaces by layering in necklaces of different thicknesses and lengths:

Vintage necklaces look great layered. Even stand alone necklaces, when piled on together can give your older treasures a more contemporary presention:

I like to always have one chunky medallion necklace with progressively shorter and more delicate pieces:

The look is high drama and great on a simple outfit, like a white T and jeans or over a black cocktail dress or tank. Be daring with your layers... think Madonna in her early years!

Southern Pride

I have lived in Charleston for nearly five years now and come to love the South as much as my Northeastern New York roots. Recently, one of my favorite magazines, which operates out of Charleston but covers all of the Southeast has been getting a lot of much-deserved attention - Garden&Gun.

The publisher and founder, Rebecca Darwin, has a similar story to mine - a New York City transplant who ended up a preacher's wife in Charleston - not a lot of us out there I assume : )! CBS just did a great segment on her and the magazine, pick up a copy of you want a little insight into the best of the Southern lifestyle.

And speaking of Southern style, Jess James is bringing her famed Style Swap back to Charleston on February 23rd - tickets are on sale now!

Best Jewelry from the 2012 Golden Globes

Even if you didn't catch the 2012 Golden Globes, hopefully you still caught a glimpse of the red carpet. Of course, I was focused on the jewels - who accessorized the best! Purple frocks and green jewels seemed to be the dominating themes. There was plenty of timeless elegance as well as funky but chic accessorizing, like Kristen Wiig who wore this great, 70's style pendant necklace with a nude gown:

Jessica Chastain opted for a classic and totally glam look with a pearl encrusted dress, large pearl earrings and a diamond cuff:

LVMH Queen Salma Hayek was literally dripping in Gucci, with a great, disco-style dress and long, angular earrings that picked up nicely on the same theme and looked stunning:

Julianne Moore and Julianna Margulies both rocked fabulous emerald colored earrings. I especially loved the combination of the green with the purple:

The statement necklace of the night was definitely worn by Heidi Klum who had a bib of raw turquoise intertwined with rhinestones. The effect was beachy-glam and picked up wonderfully on her blonde hair.

And she accented the necklace nicely with a big, turquoise cocktail ring:

Finally... more green and purple... Deborah Messing also went for green gems, with green and purple pendant earrings and a fab green cocktail ring:

Overall, a wonderfully elegant and funky collection of jewels and ensembles!

One of my Christmas presents this year was a jewelry box... Well, more than a box... kind of a jewelry tower (from Ballard Designs - I opted for the French White). My husband laughed when it actually arrived, as it nearly took two people to get it upstairs. Of course, I have quite a bit of a collection at this point, so a jewelry box that is nearly as tall is you are might not be for everyone. However, Refinery 29 just put together a great slideshow of 10 Stylish Jewelry Boxes to store all those gifts you got over the holidays. Final Pre-Holiday Trunk Show

Just got back from my last pre-Holiday trunk show of the season! This one was in Winter Garden, FL, a charming little Florida town that sprung up by virtue of the citrus industry. The town certainly had a lot of Christmas spirit, it's Main Street was completely decked-out for the holidays and all the adorable storefronts of vibrant local businesses invited people in to start (or finish) their holiday shopping.

Candy Shop Vintage was hosted by the lovely Kate Lyn's Boutique on Plant street which featured anything a girl could want for the holiday season from boots, to jewelry to fabulous faux fur wraps.

They even had a great, vintage-style painting hung in the shop that read "Yes, Yes my love. Buy whatever you want at Kate Lyn's!"

Thanks to all the ladies who came out Friday evening to support Candy Shop Vintage and Kate Lyn's Boutique, as well as Lisa, owner of Kate Lyn's and organizers Kay Cappleman and Mary Zahl. Though this was our last live event this year, we will have some exciting new things online in the next two weeks so you can continue your shopping from home. Happy Holidays!

On The Road... To Winter Garden Florida!

Hope everyone had a wonderful, tasty Thanksgiving! My husband and I were invited to a friends house this year. I always like getting a peek into other people's Holiday celebrations and traditions. Not only did they cook a fantastic meal, but the dessert was a to-die-for treat. I have never been big on Pumpkin Pie, and don't normally post about food, but the pumpkin dessert they served took things to a whole other level - Gooey Pumpkin Butter Cake from Paula Deen. Not just for Thanksgiving, it would make a great winter dessert in general served up with a little whipped cream! Mmmmmm!

Last week I was researching the dates on some of my pieces and in doing so came across a treasure trove of vintage jewelry ads. I have pulled some of my favorites, but they are all so amazing, with their illustrative imagery, fabulous phrases like "She won't be seen at the opera without her Laguna!" and soft pastel color palate. Makes you wish we could go back to simpler times!

Welcome Lauren Young! She is a new assistant at Candy Shop Vintage. To get to know her, we asked her a few questions about herself. Enjoy!1) Where are you from and where do you live now?
I am from a little town called Simpsonville, South Carolina, right outside of Greenville. The town was a little too small for my liking, so I decided to move to Charleston four years ago.

2) What is your favorite thing about Charleston?
My favorite thing about Charleston is the creative atmosphere. People visit and move to Charleston to find that they thrive here. Everything and everyone has a unique story, which makes it an interesting and exciting place to live.

3) Describe your personal style. Who are your style icons?
I love vintage clothing and accessories! Most of the things I own are either vintage or vintage inspired. Often the quality and craftsmanship of vintage clothes and accessories is superior to what you can find today and I love the idea of giving vintage pieces a new life. Two of my fashion icons are Nicole Kidman and Rachel Zoe. Nicole is classically beautiful and elegant and Rachel Zoe is great at mixing vintage with cutting edge fashion.

4) Do you own or did you inherit any vintage jewelry that you love? If so, what are your favorite pieces?
My grandmother gave me a few pieces when I moved to Charleston, including a pair of gold tone hoops that I can wear day or night. I also have a fun pair of gold costume earrings that I wear on special occasions, as well as my favorite piece - a beautiful vintage glass painted brooch – it's like a small piece of art!

5) What is your favorite thing about Candy Shop Vintage?
I love the entire Candy Shop Vintage jewelry collection! Each piece is carefully selected and reflects a time when costume jewelry was of the highest quality. I also love that the company was inspired by vintage candy stores. Who doesn't want to mix candy and costume jewelry?! It is a great combination and I think much of the collection can be worn for almost any occasion.

6) What is your favorite kind of candy?
My favorite candy is sour straws. I remember being a young girl and drinking Coca Cola out of a sour straw. Sweet and sour – a perfect match with a nice, cold Coca Cola!

An Education

Have you ever seen the movie An Education? Part of it takes place in Oxford, England and it is portrayed as a romantic and beautiful place. In real life, it is as much, if even more so! We arrived in Oxford three days ago so that my husband could collect, in his graduation ceremony, his masters degree which he completed in 2009. We spent some of our dating years together here while he was still in school and it was a treat to walk up and down the charming streets again, lined with classic English pubs and full of students riding their bikes to class and strolling in one of the many university parks. We enjoyed tea time, pub food and celebrated the completion of an Oxford education!Of course, I had to try the cap on for size... since we are married, the Oxford degree is half mine, right? : )I gave my mostly black outfit a little flair with vintage CHANEL earrings (above) and these great, vintage leopard print heels I've had forever:I also worked a bit on my own education, finding this absolutely incredible book about the history of vintage jewelry in the famous Oxford bookstore, Blackwell's:Since it is only available in the UK, looks like I will be hauling it back in my suitcase with my Karl Lagerfeld diet coke. While I am loving the romanticism of England I am also looking forward to getting back to sunny Charleston! Congratulations to my husband, and sometimes silent parter in Candy Shop Vintage on his HUGE accomplishment!

Adventures in London

I got to London a couple days ago and so far it is wonderful! I caught the tail end of London Fashion week, so there are a lot of great cultural things going on in the city - both fashion and design related.One of my first stops was Selfridges, a fun department store (sort of the British equivalent of Saks). On the ground floor, they were selling some beautiful, vintage designer jewelry including some amazing CHANEL pieces, all from a private collection:Upstairs, in their "shoe gallery" was an adorable exhibit of miniature designer shoes, basically, replicas of the real thing. The hairy arm does belong to my husband, as I made him stick it in there for scale, as they were so well-crafed that in photos, they look like full-size shoes! (It was my birthday, otherwise I don't think I could have convinced him to accompany me to a mini-designer shoe exhibit.) Apparently, they are all going to be auctioned off for charity at the end of the exhibit:Outside, they were giving away free mini-diet coke's by man behind CHANEL, Karl Lagerfeld, which was hilarious:I also managed to catch a great exhibit at the other amazing British department store, Harrod's where a museum-like CHANEL exhibit took visitors through the "world of CHANEL" including videos of the making of the classic 2.55 quilted bag, an exploration of Coco CHANEL's beloved icon's (the camelia flower, the importance of numbers in her work, and of course a No5 Fragrance room). We were not allowed to take photos, but pixiwoo.com got a sneak peek into the show before it opened...Nothing better than combining a visit to a museum with shopping!

Awhile ago, I stumbled across this wonderful blog, Advanced Style, devoted entirely to the older but still uber-stylish set! I think one of the biggest mistakes women can make is to say "Oh, I'm too old to wear that!" True, a few things might have an expiration date, like string bikinis or cut off jean shorts, but in general, the older you are the more you can get away with, fashion-wise! I thing great, big bold accessories and jewelry look fantastic on older women. Check out a few of the Advanced Style ladies:My own vintage jewelry collecting started with a few select pieces from my two grandmothers and when I am out hunting for new finds it is always the "advanced" ladies who have the best collections, often amassed over a lifetime! : )

A Visit to the "Costume Jewelry Capital of the US"

For a long time now I have been wanting to visit the City of Providence, R.I. to see what, if anything is left of the thriving factories that once made all of the highest quality costume jewelry that I now collect and sell. Some of the best, most creative jewelry companies manufactured out of Providence, R.I. from Coro, to Trifari, Kramer, Monet, and even the original AVON pieces.Of course, like many other American products, a great deal of costume jewelry production has gone overseas, but I had hoped I would find some of the original manufacturers and artisans who worked for these big design houses in the 60's-early 1990's. I was not entirely disappointed... of the nearly ten places I visited, three or four were almost full service manufacturers who make jewelry for well-known American companies. Others were smaller shops that served one crucial part of the multi-step production process that goes into making jewelry. While many of them talked about the long lost "glory" days of Providence, it is clear that there is still a large volume of high quality jewelry you see in stores all over the U.S. that is still coming out of Providence. Almost all of them were eager to share their knowledge of Providence's costume jewelry history, the art of jewelry making, and what is involved in producing a piece from design and concept to a finished product. One shop even showed is one of his old specialty products a "mini penny" (on the right) which essentially just a replica scaled-down version of a regular penny, and let us leave with a few cents in samples:The City of Providence also has an industrial beauty, which combined with the cool, crisp New England air and visits to nearby waterfront seafood shacks, made for a welcome respite from the muggy, oppressive heat of the South. One of the more fascinating aspects of visiting these suppliers and factories was seeing some of the old chains and findings they had purchased from places like Coro when those businesses went under. I even recognized some of my products and components of jewelry I've collected and sold in their archives! In some places, I could have spend days in their jewelry "libraries"...Our last stop of the trip was the much-hyped Wolf & Myrow Inc. that sold old jewelry stock, beads, parts, etc. for pretty much any piece of jewelry you might want to make. They did not have much in the way of finished pieces, but if you are a craftsman or make your own jewelry, it would be worth a visit.One the way back to New York, we drove through Mystic, CT and stopped at the nearby Abbott's Lobster and had deviled eggs and lobster rolls overlooking the New England Harbor. They also had something they are known for called a "Hot Lobster Roll" which was pretty much what it sounds like.... MMMMMmmmm! A perfect end to a trip cut a bit short by hurricane Irene!My hope, in visiting these places, is to establish a U.S. based production resource for a line of "Vintage-Inspired" jewelry I am working on. I figured there is no better way to do it than to try to track down the manufacturers and artisans who made the jewelry we love to collect and sell at Candy Shop Vintage! I will certainly post more details as this unfolds.

I just got back from a very inspiring and helpful seminar called "DIY Publicity" hosted by Amy Flurry here in Charleston. Amy's seminar covers the basics of brand-building through media and publicity, how to tactfully and professionally approach and communicate with editors and bloggers and to better understand the role of social media in marketing. In short, how to be your own in-house PR department! Amy's approach was tactful, humorous and incredibly informative, and the 5-hour seminar flew by. Her years of experience with national publications like InStyle, Lucky Magazine and O, just to name a few, made for true insider scoop well worth the reasonable price of attending the one-day seminar. In addition to Amy's many credentials as a writer, editor, and stylist, she also co-founded paper-cut-project, a company that "conceives art direction and highly crafted installations in paper for window installations, runway, catalog and advertising campaigns." paper-cut-project's work is absolutely stunning and and they count clients like Hermès and Kate Spade in their roster:Amy lives in Athens Georgia with her husband and two children... the only remaining question I have for her is, when does she sleep?!? One of my favorite people in the world to look at pictures of has to be Daphne Guinness. With her striking streak of black amidst her nearly white bleached blond hair and her Debbie Harry cum Brigitte Bardot beauty, all before you even get to whatever piece of art she is wearing, her look never tires. People have wondered, is she Lady Gaga's mother? With her penchant for futuristic, sky-high shoes and show-stopping ensembles, she might as well be. I personally find her to be far more striking and elegant and she has been carrying the drop-dead haute style trophy much longer than the pop star. Gaga, in fact, cites her as one of her muses. And the way Guinness wears jewelry is amazing, classically dramatic, but always with a twist. In Harper's Bazaar Interview from earlier this year, Derek Blasberg observes "She clips carats of diamonds to her coif the way a child would tie a ribbon around her ponytail."She is a collector of Haute Couture, akin to a gallery curator and seems to have a laissez-faire attitude to putting together looks that can seem so fantastically dramatic and studied, when in fact, they are the opposite, "If I think about it too much, I can't get dressed," she says. And it seems certain that with various creative endeavors in the works... a film, a fragrance, an exhibition of her personal wardrobe at FIT this fall, and a mysterious sounding diamond piece of armor jewelry she is working on in collaboration with jeweler Shaun Leane, we will get to enjoy her style and vision for some time to come.

Last night was the semi-annual Sale Soiree and we had a blast! Memminger Auditorium was filled with retailers offering their best deals on their fashion wares! I just got back from a trip to Brimfield, Mass. where three times a year a massive, five mile flea market and antiques show spreads out along the main road into the town. This year was brutally hot and it made me think twice about wanting to return again in July! I mainly hunt for vintage jewelry there, of where there is plenty, but that is not to say I do not come across some other amazing finds along the way. From artwork to art deco to antique dress forms, sequined tops and a brass and marble gazelle head (that had to come home with me!), there is something for everyone! I just got back from a little Southern road trip to an Antiques Show in Atlanta where I picked up a bunch of new jewelry and a lot of Candy Shop Vintage inspiration! Some dealers had real collector's pieces, like this lucite cuff and earrings by Dominique:And these Egyptian revival pieces by Miriam Haskell:And besides jewelry, one of my favorite finds was this amazing 6' tall painting of Marilyn Monroe that I discovered peeking out at me under a tent. The colors are fabulous and for $100 I could not leave her behind:There was this fantastic, old candy sign for Hollingsworth Candies... their tagline was "For those who love fine things." Love it!:And in that vein, there was a great, old rack of vintage candy jars. The Magic of Van Cleef & Arpels

I am staying in NYC for the week, chez my good friends the Rokusons. Today I ventured from their Tribeca abode through the windy city and up to 91st Street to meet my mom and see the Van Cleef & Arpels Exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt. The exhibit is up through the 5th of June and is absolutely worth the trip uptown! There are 350 breathtaking pieces encased in glass and behind layers of sulky looking security guards, each one a magical glimpse into the world of Van Cleef, from drawings and videos of their intricate production process to finished, sculpturally complex pieces...This bracelet, a modernist design sprinkled with diamonds was one of my favorites:And the most innovative was the "Zipper" necklace with actually works AND transforms into a bracelet when the back segment detaches:And finally, there was a wonderful set of exotic "Chinese Hat" jewelry made of segmented gold shapes that mimic the design of woven Chinese hats:This is just a fragment of what is there, definitely take advantage of the opportunity to view this historic jewelry collection in person if you are in NYC this spring!

This is the third year I have attended (out of the five it has been around) and each year the bar get set a bit higher, thanks to the creative spearheading power of Charleston Magazine's style editor Ayoka Lucas. In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, I thought I'd show off someone's jewelry collection that is enough to make you green with envy! I recently had the privilege of sitting and chatting with Miss Lindsay Fleege, current regional events coordinator for Cynthia Rowley and former accessories coordinator for CHANEL. She has an amazing collection of CHANEL jewelry and great personal style as well as a love and appreciation of vintage jewelry. Last Easter, she showed up at my Easter brunch with plastic eggs full of vintage jewelry as a hostess present and I knew I’d made a friend for life! So, when I got the chance to interview Lindsay in her chic Charleston studio off of Colonial Lake, I jumped at the opportunity.
You moved here from New York City where you worked for CHANEL. What was your role there?
I was the accessories coordinator for CHANEL. So I worked with all the magazine editors and made sure they got product samples for photo shoots, as well as helped with photo shoots and US events. (Lindsay pictured above with her PR team, is second from right, in front of the CHANEL airliner used for one of their runway shows.)

How did working for CHANEL affect your personal style?
I've always been a CHANEL girl at heart, so it translated well into my personal style... but it stepped it up a couple notches!

What is it about CHANEL that appeals to women of all ages?
They always say this about CHANEL - that it's timeless - and it really is. No matter how vintage a piece is or how new, it translates and somehow has some kind of pull on everyone. It's always on trend and stylish while being both conservative and modern. Just some of Lindsay's personal collection of CHANEL jewelry: You have a LOT of CHANEL jewelry. Out of everything you have, what are your top three favorite pieces?
I have a large collection (laughs). (EDITOR'S NOTE: She is not kidding. When I arrived, it was spread out all over the bedroom, bed and side tables and it is not even her whole collection, just some of the best pieces. I will not disclose the exact street she lives on for fear she will be held hostage by some local fashionista!) I love my eagle pendant and love pieces on a long chain or pieces that can be worn alone as a statement piece. You can wear a great piece of CHANEL costume jewelry with a plain white T-shirt and you've got your outfit pulled together! Also, I love the giant CHANEL cuffs:What are some of the icons used again and again in CHANEL jewelry and accessories? What is the meaning behind them?
A lot of them go back to Coco Chanel and where she started... for example, the number 5 represents her perfume, which is what she began with. She was also very enchanted with Zodiac symbols, which you see a lot in her fine jewelry collections, as well as of course, the classic quilted pattern throughout her jewelry and accessories. There is also the four leaf clover, a sign of luck, in which she believed. And, the Camellia appears in almost every collection, it was her favorite flower.Why does CHANEL costume jewelry hold its value so well even though it is not "fine" jewelry?
It's all handmade in Paris. Even though you now see costume jewelry from so many designers, CHANEL is the original purveyor of high fashion, costume jewelry.

Do you collect or wear other vintage jewelry?
Yes, I love collecting vintage jewelry! I love to mix and match, the high and the low, visiting antiques shops and estate sales. I have a collection of rhinestone necklaces and I love to pile them on and wear them together, or layer in with other necklaces with a T-shirt or a (CHANEL) blazer.

Any other styling tips for vintage jewelry?
I am a total believer in the statement piece - keep everything else simple and show that off, you'll get tons of compliments! And I love long, layered necklaces.

You now live in Charleston, SC and work at Cynthia Rowley? How has working for Cynthia affected your personal style? What to you do there?
I the am the regional events coordinator for Cynthia Rowley. I've been a fan of Cynthia since I was young and even purchased a dress from her original SoHo Boutique and wore it to my senior prom! Her collections really mean something to me. She's got a great, young modern vibe and like CHANEL has pieces that stay in your closet and work season after season.

What is your favorite Cynthia Rowley piece for Spring 2011?
Actually, I love her spring 2011 jewelry! We carry these necklaces that are just a simple, resin bar on a chain that come in different colors. You can wear them alone or layer them. I am really looking forward to wearing those this spring, along with her solid red (hibiscus colored) dress with perforations that has a cute, drop waist. Very easy to wear and modern! Here are my jewelry picks from the Red Carpet of the 2011 Academy Awards. Amazing earrings! There were many fabulous ear adornments to choose from, including Mila Kunis's elegant diamond loops, Reese Witherspoon's green gemstone drop earrings (which looked great with her '50's updo!), Natalie Portman's fabulous tassel earrings and Marisa Tomei's huge flowered gemstone earrings:Reese paired her stunning green earrings with some great Art Deco-style jewelry, stacked platinum bracelets and a huge emerald cocktail ring:Art Deco gems seemed to be the look of the night, like one of my FAVORITE jewelry selections on Amy Adams, in this complimentary vintage-style necklace and bracelet pairing:World's most perfect human being, Gwyneth Paltrow also rocked some vintage inspired pieces, including what looked like a brooch worn low at her waist and colorful sprig gemstone earrings:Scarlett Johansson wore a great, absolutely huge cocktail ring that picked up on her lacey gown:And one of the most elegant looks of the night was, surprisingly, Mandy Moore, with her gorgeous diamond dome-shaped earrings and matching cocktail ring. That 70's Vibe

In watching all of the Spring 2011 fashion shows, it seemed clear that one decade in particular was being dusted off and brought back out - the 1970's. Designers like Louis Vuitton in Jill Sander featured color-blocked clothes that livened up the runway. Katy Perry recently appeared on the cover of Elle in one of Gucci's brightly hued Spring satin suits, looking ready for a Boogie Nights sequel casting. I Want Candy

As pre-Valentine's day treat for last minute shoppers, I brought my vintage jewelry to the hip Charleston Robot Candy Co. during Second Sunday on King Street, where the street is closed off to cars for the afternoon. It was a beautiful day and sitting just inside the Robot Candy Co. window, I watched everyone in Charleston enjoying a perfect Southern winter afternoon and venturing into Robot for some sugary fuel.Mothers shopped while there kids worked on their sugar highs and a number of "Where's Waldo" second-sundayers popped into say hello, as apparently there was some kind of costume contest going on outside. Thank you to Robot Candy Co. owners Lisa and David for being such gracious hosts and having such a cool store here in Charleston!

Four Days, Four Outfits

Still not sure how to incorporate vintage jewelry into your wardrobe? I just got back from a four day wedding in Costa Rica where (per my husband) my carry-on bag felt like it was "filled with bricks" because of the many jewelry options I travelled with! Here were my four main outfits and the jewelry I wore with them. The first was for a welcome cocktail event, all black with large, pink enamel CHANEL logo earrings (pictured with my best friend of 25 years, Laura!):I managed to wear some jewelry to the beach and out on a boat... a vintage inspired lucite orange bangle and tiny, vintage AVON starfish earrings, which sadly became a "sacrifice to the party gods" as one friend likes to say, after I left them behind somewhere:I paired big 70's style Lucite and gold clip-on hoops with an all-white Cynthia-Rowley dress and vintage seashell rope belt to attend a traditional Costa Rican "Turno" or festival. Clear Lucite looks great with white:The most jewelry I piled on was for the wedding itself, choosing gold to stand out against my floor length Zac Posen for Target dress. The vintage earrings and clutch were perfectly beachy, from my own collection, as was the must-have green cocktail ring, and the gold tassel necklace came from Vintage Queen, Lori Wyatt:I borrowed from my inventory to accessorize with this fabulous expandable Boucher serpentine bracelet, as the colors picked up nicely on my dress:Pairing the right vintage pieces with more contemporary outfits can make your look unique without overdoing it on the vintage front. Sale Soiree Success

The Charleston Sale Soiree was a total success last Friday, bringing in over three hundred shoppers and supporters to Memminger Auditorium in downtown Charleston last Friday night to benefit PAR.Shoppers mingled, sipped champagne and enjoyed several runway shows by local designers. I had a booth with my jewelry and some of Lori Wyatt's lovely vintage clothes, which complimented my baubles perfectly (that is me wearing one of her ostrich feather hats, above). It was so much fun, it almost didn't feel like work!

2011 Golden Globe Jewelry Moments

Awards season is upon us! The red carpet at the 2011 Golden Globes glittered with fabulous jewelry. Who accessorized best this year? I just loved Sandra Bullock's piles of silver bracelets. They gave her elegant gown a rock n'roll edge and picked up nicely on the silver sequins:A pregnant and glowing Natalie Portman looked like a princess in classic diamond studs, hot pink lipstick and an elegant diamond bib necklace:Halle Berry also piled on the bracelets, though a little more decadently with thick, diamond wristbands that sparkled fabulously against her black cocktail dress:Leighton Meester's vintage-inspired outfit and accessories were by far my favorite of the red carpet picks. I loved her tassel handbag, bangles, cocktail ring and huge, 70's style earrings. She looked like she was having fun with what she wore and it was much more age-appropriate than some kind of formal, strapless gown would have been:Finally, Angelina Jolie knows what works for her and she always looks great in green. Though she was looking a little bird-like, her demure, modernist emerald studs picked up nicely on her fabulous, sparkly green gown that did not need much accessorizing:

Fun times in the Vintage Village this Saturday for the Lowcountry Aids Services benefit brunch! Candy Shop Vintage and other local vintage retailers (Lori Wyatt, Cavortress, Style Girl & Love Me Again) collaborated to make the ultimate vintage pop-up-shop experience. Charleston Magazine's style director, Ayoka Lucas made her editor's picks at each of our booths:Attendees sipped mimosas and perused Lori Wyatt's stunning vintage gowns, coats and separates as well as my assortment of treats:Style Girl Jess James came all the way from Wilmington to put her James & Dunne collection on offer to the Charleston crowd (I bought an AMAZING dress from her Thursday evening at Style Swap!)I even ran into the winner of the necklace I donated to the Style Swap:And waited on my youngest and most fashionable customer of the weekend, who bought a lovely rhinestone dolphin pin for her white faux fur shrug:It's never too soon to start accessorizing! ; ) P.S. ... Without looking, well, old! Here are five stylish ways to incorporate brooches, vintage or new, into your wardrobe without feeling like your headed for the Bingo hall:
1) Head & Hair JewelryAdorn your hair or just your headband with a sparkly accent piece. Brooches can easily be clipped into a swept up bun or added to a basic elastic headband for some extra flair.

2) On a Shrunken Blazer
Shrunken blazers are great for the holiday season and can easily be dressed up or down. A brooch looks adorable on a fitted blazer a la Nichole Ritchie with big, Jackie O' sunglasses or doubled for playful impact (right).

Although photographer Terry Richardson has a reputation for being a bit of a creep, I do love his photography and am really enjoying this recent series he did of NY socialites, all photographed and interviewed for V Magazine. He makes them look bizarre, intense and uber stylish all at once and the jewelry is FABULOUS!:Kind of a throwback to the 70's. Mini Mortimer, the second girl interviewed was asked what her favorite thing about New York was and she replied "The rate at which ideas are turned over, work is accomplished, the efficiency of it all. That creates a powerful energy." Sigh. After a HOT Southern summer and a hurricane on the way, I could use a dose of that NYC brand energy to bring back to Charleston with me! Maybe I can trade some pralines for it?
